What is NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of supporting eligible Australians living with a permanent or significant disability. The NDIS gives eligible participants an invaluable opportunity to build their independence for everyday tasks, purchase consumable products such as continence, nutrition and wound care products, and provide access to in-home care services or re-join the workforce. You will initially get a custom plan based on your needs or the needs of someone you provide care for. NDIS plan will be used to help identify and achieve your goals, whether they be finding and managing a job, joining a social or recreational group, or arranging and paying for products, personal care to assist in everyday life or social and community participation.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
There is a number of criteria you must meet to be eligible for the NDIS ; such as,
• Be under the age of 65 at the time of application.
• Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen (with Protected Special Category Visa)
• Having a permanent disability that impacts how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.
• You may also be eligible for early intervention if it substantially improves your functioning and quality of life, or delays/decreases a decline in you or your child’s functioning.

How can I apply a NDIS plan?
You can contact your LAC or NDIS directly to get more information to obtain a NDIS plan for yourself or your family member. Firstly, you will need to complete an Access Request Form which include information about your disability and how it impacts on your day-to-day life. You may need to ask your health professional to fill out and sign certain parts of the form. Here is the link for an access request form on NDIS website

Can my family help in the NDIS process?
You can have your family and loved ones to be part of the planning process and be there for you every step of the way. It will helps you achieve your short, medium and long term goals.
What does NDIS fund?
The NDIS will work with you to establish what reasonable and necessary supports and services you need to live your life and achieve your goals and then provide you with funding to make this happen. You will get a plan with your funding to use your chosen support services like education, employment, community and social participation, independence, living arrangements, and health and wellbeing.
How can I manage my funding?
You can manage your NDIS funding in three different ways, and you can use a combination. The three options are:
• Your plan is managed by the NDIA ( NDIA Managed)
• Your plan is managed by a Plan Manager (Plan Managed)
• You manage your NDIS plan (Self managed)
Will all NDIS participant receive the same plan?
No. Everyone has different goals and situations, the NDIS support participants based on their goals so the supports will differ from participant to participant. When you participate your planning meeting, your NDIS Planner will work with you to determine what supports are “reasonable and necessary” for you to achieve your goals.
Is transport covered under NDIS?
If you are not able to use public transport because of your disability, you may be eligible for NDIS funding to cover your transport costs. You cannot get NDIS funding to carers or family members to transport you to everyday commitments. NDIS can fund supports and services to help you build confidence and learn how to travel and use public transport independently.
What will happen when my plan is approved?
Your Local area coordinator will be in contact with you when your plan is approved and will help you get started. Your NDIS plan will appear on your myplace portal approximately 24 hours after it is approved. And you will receive a hard copy of your plan as well. You can connect with your chosen providers like Caring Friends to guide you and arrange your support services when you ready to start.
How do I request a review of my plan?
NDIS plan review meeting is for look at what worked and what didn’t, and another opportunity to discuss progress towards your goals and note any changes moving forward. Your NDIS plan will typically be reviewed after your first 12–24 months. Your LAC will be in contact with you approximately six to eight weeks before your plan expires. If your circumstances change you can request a review of your plan at any time.
